The other day I chanced to run into my neighbor, David Frazier. As some of you probably know from articles in the Maui Weekly, or e-mails for the Kihei Community Association, David has been pretty busy as President of the KCA, striving to improve the infrastructure and environment we live in, here in South Maui.
We talked for a few minutes; on my part to express my appreciation for all the hard work he has obviously put in. On his, to tell me, with much enthusiasm, how he and others in the KCA have been getting some attention from County government on issues such as cleaning up our facilities along the South Maui coastline (ever use one of our several restrooms or shower facilities?), Kalama Park improvements, the current attempts to get a hospital and high school in South Maui, etc.
I'm writing this because of something David said that really hit me hard. In the midst of explaining how "our" voice was getting some attention from those that govern us, he said "and that's with only 270 members in KCA", or something to that effect. That floored me, that there were only 270 members in KCA. Later, in reflection on our conversation and that comment, I thought, 'that's less than 1% of the 30,000 odd population we have here in South Maui.
Guilt was the first emotion I felt - for not doing more to support KCA - things like showing up for meetings, showing support by speaking up in support of various endeavors, contributing more $$'s..... We have a huge tax base here in South Maui and see a pathetically small portion of that base come back in support of the many needs we have.
Each of us has co-workers, neighbors, friends, and family living here in South Maui. If just a small fraction of the 30,000 residents in South Maui joined the KCA, it would swell that 270 number and amplify it's voice. We all benefit from a ever stronger KCA, it is our primary representation for South Maui.
For an application form for join KCA, click here. Thank you for taking the time to read this. Perhaps we’ll see each other at a future KCA meeting! Mahalo and Aloha. |
